Costa Rica is one of the most biologically intense and diverse places on the planet. Although the country is not that large (you can drive from the Pacific to the Caribbean in just a few hours) it contains about 5% of all the plant and animal species in the world, including as many kinds of birds as the United States and Mexico combined. This includes 6 or the world’s 42 types of toucans. The ones that come by our house called the chestnut-mandible (also called “Swainsons”) is the largest in all of Costa Rica and has a very distinctive cry which Ticos say is “Dios te de, te de, te de” or “God grant you.”

The toucan is also the nick-name for the 5 thousand colones bill – which is currently about equal to to a US $10 bill. They call it the toucan because of the colorful toucan on the back-side of the bill. The toucans that come by our new place are the same type on the cinco mil colones billete
