at the Beach

waiting for the sun...

Well so far it has been a pretty uneventful summer here in San Diego as far as beach days. This is because the sun has been shining about as many days that you can count on one hand. If the sun isn’t shining it has been pretty gloomy, cold and gray. It is not that much fun at the beach if you can’t go in the water and have to wear a sweatshirt. So needless to say we have to find other ways to enjoy our free time. However when the sun is out we try to take advantage of it as much as we can. That is why we were very excited when the sun finally broke for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon for Eli’s friend Sydney’s 1st birthday party.

July 2010 Garden Update: Growing them Big

Growing

We really have not seen that much of the sun over the past couple of weeks. June gloom has turned into June/July Gloom.  Eli and the plants do not seem to mind as they continue to grow, sunshine or not.

Big Zuchini

The Zucchini’s that we have been harvesting this year have been ridiculous. They just seam to get bigger and bigger.

Cherokee Purple

Still waiting for our tomatoes to turn red. We have one plant that is pushing almost 10 ft now. I am not quite sure how I am going to harvest the ones from the top yet.

1st Annual Ocean Beach Garden Party Tour

A couple of weekends ago we sent out an email to a couple of our neighborhood friends to see if they’d like to partake in a garden party tour. Here’s what it said,

“Summer is here and are gardens are almost in full bloom! Our guys have been toiling away in the garden for months now and it’s time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. I know all the guys think that their garden is “top dog” so lets give everyone a chance to show the yards off in the first annual Ocean Beach Garden Tour!!!! Ricky concocted an idea that would include visiting each house for a 1-2 hours for beverages and hors d’oeuvres then riding our bikes to the next house. Let’s try and use some items from our gardens for inspiration in our dishes! Everything should be “easy and premade” so we can enjoy being outdoors ;) We can start at the Coburn’s Water Wonderland first then head over to the Wilson-Harding Hilltop Manor, and then finish at the Bohemian Belmont Garden. So chime in and let me know whats up, and we’ll get this event under way!”

Needless to say it was a major success! It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and now we are looking forward to next year.

Almost There

Eli has been really been trying to figure our how to get mobile. A couple of days ago he figured out how to roll everywhere. We thought to ourselves,”Well that is what babes at 6 months do, but Eli is almost 9 months, I guess better late than never.” Then the very next day he must of decided that rolling was for 6month olds because he started to do the army crawl. Then by the end of the day he was getting tired of the army crawl and started doing push-ups. He hasn’t quite figured out what to do next, but as you can tell from these photos, he is almost…wait….oh…not yet…wait…a little more….

going mobile

Organic Garden Plots

Shade Garden

orchid

Our shade garden is starting to take off with the rest of our vegetable gardens. This is the the area that is directly outside of our living room where we keep our fish tank and our seedlings. One of the cymbidium orchid plants that we picked up from GG a month ago is starting to bloom in our Shade Garden. These flowers are so detailed and beautiful.

Garden Plot: 1 – Compost Garden

We are really excited about the tomato plants in our fist garden plot. I mentioned last week that one of the plants was reaching 6ft in the air, I thought that we would show you the picture so you could get an idea of what I am talking about. The funny thing is that they are not even close to being done growing. They are just now producing their first round of produce, which means that they have allot more growing yet to come. This garden plot consists solely on plants that we either started from seeds, or volunteers. Volunteers or rouge plants are those that sprout randomly from the year before. Because we compost, and had chickens that free-ranged all last year, we have over 30 volunteer plants all over the yard that we have either left as is, or moved into a garden plot of pot to grow. So far 0ur volunteers range from spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.

In this first garden plot we only used a straight batch of our homemade compost. This consists of our vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, egg shells,  dog hair, junk mail, chicken poop, and yard scraps. The compost is high in nutrients and keeps the plants healthy and strong. We mixed the compost a good three feet into the existing soil and let in sit for three weeks before moving our seedlings into the plot.

Garden Plot: 2 – Hummus Garden

In our other  garden plot (pictured above) we did not dig down into the existing soil at all but left the soil as is and only added worm hummus (worm poop) and worm tea to the top of the soil which we eventually watered into the soil. This is because we have a perennial artichoke plant in this plot that we do not want to kill.  We have already harvested over a dozen artichokes from this plant so we cut it back a month ago to let the last one turn into a flower. I guess that it wasn’t done because as soon as I cut it back it started to grow again. Not only did it start to grow, but it is also putting out  new artichokes. Looks like we we will have another round of artichokes before this summer is over.  I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that this plot is doing  very well on its own accord with greens, peppers, squash and zucchini.

Garden Plot: 3 – Pot Garden (not the stuff you smoke)

I am also experimenting with growing some seasonal vegetables just in pots, these are doing very well also. This is so that  I can find out how to grow things when you don’t have allot of space or a yard to put a plot in. The soil mixture in the pots is 50/50 compost and soil from the yard.

Garden Plot: 4 – Aquaponic Garden

aquaponic garden

Then finally we have our aquaponics garden (garden pond) . So far the peppers and herbs are doing great in this garden yet I am still finding out if I can grow tomatoes and other vegetables in this set up, or if they need to be in soil. The Tilapia that we are raising seam to be growing fast, along with the gold fish and Koi.

organic mildew spray

Two years ago our garden was attacked by a powdery mildew that took over our pumpkins and spread to the rest of our plants. You might remember this from our post back from September 08, Garden Chronicles: Chapter 8  Garden Warfare.

Photos taken from Fall Garden 08

Last year I decided to water the garden from the ground only in an attempt to keep the mildew away from the foliage of our plants. Well, it didn’t help. Our tomatoes our melons and everything in between eventually got taken over by the powdery mildew and eventually it overtook the garden. This year I am going to try something different. So far the plants are doing just fine, but I know as soon as we start harvesting their first rounds of produce they will be susceptible to the mildew. I have already seen it taking over  a buddies garden down the street, so I know that in no time it will start infesting our garden as well.

I spent a little time looking up different concoctions to see what might work best for our plants and type of garden. I decided to go with a water backing soda mix.

All that you need is the following:

  • 1qt of water
  • 1tsp of backing soda
  • 1tsp of dish soap
  • 1tsp of vegetable oil

It is pretty easy to make , and there is a good chance that most of us have these ingredients already in our homes so that we do not need to run out to the market to pick anything up.

  1. First ad 1tsp of backing soda to 1qt of water
  2. then ad 1tsp of vegetable oil
  3. then ad 1tsp of dish soap
  4. Mix in blender or stir thoroughly
  5. put in spray bottle

After you have your mixture you can apply it the foliage on your infected plants. Spray both sides of the infected foliage. It is important to do this only on an overcast day, or at dusk so that your plants leaves do not get over heated and burned by the spay in direct sunlight.

You can spray the plants once every 3-5 days, or more if needed.

to Cute

the grom

My brother and his wife were in town for  a conference and we got to meet them for lunch the other day.  My brother caught this cute picture of Eli as he was leaning against my shoulder. It was really cool to get to visit with them, even if it was only for a short time. We miss our family allot, even more so now with the little grom.

Oklahoma

Lyndsey and Eli have been visiting grandma (gammy) and grandpa in Oklahoma. Lyndsey said the other day it was over 100 degrees, so it appears summer has wasted no time showing up this year. Not a problem if you have a pool and you like to swim.
