Basilisk Pool Side

I was heading back to the office after lunch and found a Basilisk sitting poolside. At first I thought that it was a branch that had fallen from a tree until it started moving in an UN-natural way. This type of lizard stands out from the others because it is very jurassic looking. It looks a lot like a little dinosaur especially when it stands up on its back legs and walks upright. It is also able to walk on water which has earned it the nickname the “Jesus Christ Lizard”.

In European bestiaries and legends, a basilisk is a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance.

I had to borrow the image above from wildherps.com because all that I had was my was my handy iphone 3g on me. I did however manage to take a rather rough video of it as it cleared the grounds and headed back to the cabrada where it lives. We get to see these guys in action as they fight each other over territory in the creek below the house sometimes and it is pretty interesting to watch as they stand upright and attack each other. Sometimes they stand nearly two feet tall.
